Family safari in Botswana
Botswana is a superb destination for a family safari vacation as it offers exceptional game viewing and excellent accommodation in luxurious lodges and atmospheric tented camps. There are some very special and unique features within Botswana that never fails to bring visitors under its spell to come back time and time again.
Once such speciality is the Okavango Delta, an exquisite blue and green wildlife area that is created by annual floodwaters from high in the Angolan highlands producing what is in fact a wetland within a desert. The migration of animals and birdlife to this welcome abundance of water delivers an amazing game viewing experience.
There are safari camps with their own resident Elephant herd where guests are educated and encouraged to interact with these majestic beasts, mokoro safaris where you can glide quietly along reed fringed water channels with a unique perspective on the wildlife; game drives by springy 4x4 vehicles and guided nature walks to appreciate the beauty of the nature; spacious luxury tented rooms set high on teak decks that wind their way around lofty jackalberry trees with comfy beds to sink into at the end of an exciting day.
Many camps, Duma Tau, Chitabe Lediba, Savuti and Vumbura Plains for example, all have large family rooms, however, due to demand on the few available it is advisable that you book as early as possible to avoid being disappointed. It is important also to select a camp with interconnecting rooms removing any need to go out of one room and into the other at night. There are small, intimate tented camps that have perhaps only six or eight tents could be secured on an exclusive basis for a family or group and with the high ratio of staff to guests, luxury tents with en-suite facilities and delicious freshly prepared meals it is an enchantingly private safari experience.
Camps and lodges may apply a condition that a private vehicle and guide are booked for the duration of a family safari, however, this works very well in respect of flexibility and it certainly creates a more relaxed game drive for all concerned. The accommodation is usually on a fully inclusive basis covering meals, local drinks, game viewing activities and laundry service which means the budget can be set pre-arrival and there are no financial surprises for the core comforts.
From Johannesburg a short scheduled flight into Maun connects with regular light aircraft flights directly to the camp airstrips – not an overlong journey for children. A family safari vacation in Botswana is easily combined with a stay at Victoria Falls or the bustling cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Due to prevailing malarial and medical issues, consideration is particularly important when planning travel to certain areas of Africa with babies and very young children as this may not be ideal. A specialist tour operator will be able to supply you with the appropriate facts for consideration together with advice concerning any specific age restrictions that may apply to your party in respect of game viewing activities.
Botswana cannot fail to charm even the most experienced safari connoisseur – it truly is a magical place.
