Family Safari in Tanzania

The wildlife of Africa is brought into our very own homes by the media but even these exquisite images cannot compete with seeing the real thing with your own eyes. A family safari in Africa is a superb option and a destination that will excite and inspire, however, anyone that travels with children is only too aware of the importance of finding accommodation that openly welcomes and celebrates the young ones.

Private safari houses and villas, where available, are ideal for a family safari or for groups as this delivers a flexibility in respect of meals and activities which can be particularly important for younger children. Often a private chef, guide and vehicle are included in this type of accommodation. The superior luxury safari lodges and tented camps all have spacious, comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities, chefs producing delicious freshly cooked meals, a high ratio of staff to number of guests and of course professional and experienced guides.

A safari in Northern Tanzania with private vehicle and guide is an excellent option for a family vacation. Your safari vacation will follow a plan of game drive en-route to your next lodge or camp to enjoy game viewing activities with your guide and private vehicle until your departure to the next lodge. A privately guided safari allows flexibility for a family to spend the right amount of time at each activity to suit them, within the plotted course, relaxed within their own vehicle.

As well as game viewing activities there are cultural opportunities such as visits to local Masaai villages. There are many excellent game reserves with luxury accommodation in Northern Tanzania that will enchant all members of the family – Tarangire Treetops where as the name suggests, rooms are set on platforms high in the arms of age old Baobab and Marula.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge perched on the very rim of the crater with game drives down on to the crater floor which due to restrictions of access is not overcrowded. Plantation Lodge, close to the Ngoronogoro Conservation Area can offer private family accommodation in its enchanting four bedroom Garden House. Sayari Camp, the only permanent camp in a corner of the northern Serengeti, has an arrangement of chic tented suites that allows one side of the camp to be booked on an exclusive basis.

A safari in Southern Tanzania, accessed by light aircraft, is better suited to older children and offers the same high standard of luxury accommodation and excellent game viewing in the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park.

After the game viewing it may be an option to add a few days on the beach. Tanzania has several family friendly beach destinations making this an enjoyable addition to a luxury African safari vacation. Breezes Beach Club on the exotic island of Zanzibar and on Chumbe Island are both set up to inform as well as entertain their guests. Kinasi Lodge on the Mafia Archipelago has a lovely family room. A relaxing stay on the palm fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean is the perfect conclusion to an amazing Tanzanian safari vacation.

Travelling to certain areas of Africa with babies and very young children may not be ideal due to the prevailing malarial and medical considerations and it is important that research should be done concerning the age restrictions that may be in place concerning game drives for example. The advice of a specialist and knowledgeable tour operator plays a very important role here.
