Face to face with a Silverback Gorilla...

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

Hidden in the depths of the African continent is Rwanda a relatively small yet incredibaly beautiful country that has started to emerge from its unforgettable and traumatic past with great drive and purpose.

Rwanda claims just over 26,000 square kilometres as a country although fairly small in size Rwanda’s development, evolution and vision for its future is very positive, Rwanda is a country striking out for a better future. At the heart of this positivism is the country’s president a man called Paul Kagame, who is actively striving and achieving results for the benefit of the country at a phenomenal rate.

Rwanda is made up of four provinces gathered around Kigali the capital city at its heart. Throughout these four provinces is the most natural beauty imaginable. To the west of country on the border with Democratic Republic of the Congo is the beautiful Lake Kivu, there is Nyungwe Forest National Park to the south, whilst in the northern reaches are the towering peaks of the Volcanoes National Park and Akagera National Park which shares the countries eastern border with Tanzania.

Rwanda has spectacular scenery. The perfectly furrowed hills are farmed to their full potential through utilizing every available acre every available regardless of difficult gradients. Rwanda farms Tea, coffee and bananas in the many plantations that spill steeply down the hillsides, in an incredibly ordered patchwork quilt of farmland.

Nyungwe Forest National Park. Covering more than 1,000 square kilometres of land in the south east region of Rwanda is Nyungwe which is one of the biggest and oldest natural rainforests that remains in the world. The rain forest dates right back to the last ice age and has more than 200 species of tree and almost 300 different bird species, it is quite easy to see why many find Nyungwe such an attractive place. Yet in addition to this fabulous rich and diverse habitat Nyungwe is known for its primates which add to its appeal as it has thirteen different genus which includes our closest relative the chimpanzee.

Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu draws visitors to its shores between visits to Nyungwe’s Chimpanzees and tracking gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park. The lake’s surface area covers more than 2,700 square kilometres and it just over 480 metres deep. Visitors to Lake Kivu are mesmerized by its tranquillity which makes it the ideal location to relax.

Volcanoes National Park. To the north-west of Rwanda is the Volcanoes National Park (PNV) which borders neighbouring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A dense carpet of thick green tropical rainforest covers the towering volcanoes some of which tip 15,000 feet. This is the perfect habitat for the last few surviving mountain gorillas on the planet.

The farmland that meets with the park border ends dramatically and is replaced by a thick rich evergreen and bamboo forest in which thrives a multitude of colourful birds, monkeys and the more elusive buffalo and elephant.

Experiencing gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park, where have every chance of successfully tracking a 400lb hairy, chest pounding silverback is something you will never forget. The guides and trackers will professionally take you into the mountains to afford you the opportunity to spend an hour or so with the gorillas which is undoubtedly a humbling encounter.
