Relax on a sun drenched Indian Ocean island...
Idyllic Indian Ocean beaches
There is something romantically exotic about the islands of the Indian Ocean and after a superb game viewing safari it is ideal to end your holiday with a few days on the beach.
With beaches of blindingly white sand lapped by the azure ocean and fringed by tropical palms and coconut trees there are a range of islands to suit all tastes – Mauritius, one of the larger islands with its five star resort hotels, the jewelled necklace of islands that make up the Seychelles; Zanzibar with its rich, but troubled, history and famed spice trade and the many small islands off the coast of East Africa and Mozambique. Each location is a paradise for relaxation, warm sunshine and fragrant breezes that also offers activities and excitement in the form of water sports and some of the best scuba diving in the world.
A holiday on the beaches of the Indian Ocean can be easily combined with a safari trip and has proved to be a popular choice for honeymooners, couples and families with active teenagers. The right choice of location can deliver a tranquil paradise environment with as much sociability as is desired. The remote and idyllic beach lodges of the Islands off the coast of East Africa are easily combined with a safari as it only takes a short scheduled light aircraft flight to deliver you into paradise. Sensitive conservation is undertaken to protect the fragile nature and coral reefs and by visiting historical forts and bazaars visitors can support the local communities whilst enjoying themselves.
Despite the conflicts and difficult history of this coastline the shores of Tanzania and Kenya offer only tranquillity although the sight of an Arab dhow on the horizon demonstrates how steeped in history this region is. Thankfully the visitors now are only interested in peace and respect for the natural environment, local peoples and their traditions.
To the south, off the coast of Mozambique the islands of the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelago are very accessible for those spending their safari time in Southern Africa. The scuba diving on the archipelago is second to none and in combination with excellent fishing and intimate romantic candlelit dinners on remote beaches memories are created to treasure forever.
With small, intimate lodges Mozambique really is a barefoot in the sand paradise that dreams are made of. Whilst divers and avid snorkelers will be in their element there are other more leisurely activities on offer such as traditional dhow cruises, bird watching and gentle historical guided walks.
Mauritius, being a slightly larger island, provides more in the way of modern accommodation and ideal for those visitors who want a little more vibrancy and sociability as well as the charms of the golden beaches and water sports.
