Kenyan coast beaches

Kenya’s coastline stretches from Tanzania in the south to Somalia in the north for over 480 kilometres.

The tranquil white beaches, golden sand dunes, warm turquoise water, archaeological treasures and idyllic secluded islands are an attractive location for a week or so after an exhilarating safari. Kenya’s ports and beaches are steeped in a distinct and evocative culture that stretches back over a thousand years. There are Four Marine National Parks and five Marine National Reserves that protect a myriad of fishes and their habitat – the coral reefs.

The influence of a rich trading history and flourishing coral reefs makes a stay on the Kenyan coast more than a simple sun and sand fix.

The coast is lined with pristine palm tree beaches, with sands that gently shelve into the calm inviting waters of the Indian Ocean. The beaches are intercepted by the wide mouth of Kilifi Creek, whose azure waters are a popular port of call on the international yachting circuit.

In addition to the mainland beaches Kenya has some fabulous little islands such as Funzi Island with a beach lodge called Funzi Keys which offers a Robinson Crusoe type of stay with talcum powder beaches and a flourishing Marine National Park close by. At Funzi there are a variety of water sports available from the superbly located west-facing beach this remote and exclusive hideaway is the perfect place to escape to after an exhilarating safari. The other benefit is that it is only a 15 minute flight from Mombassa.

As an alternative you might like to choose a stay at Lamu a small, historic coastal town, with narrow winding streets, old mosques, vibrant markets with traders using donkeys and dhows for transport rather than vehicles. Lamu has a slow pace of life, a wonderful stretch of beach near the harbour and a rich culture that pervades every corner.

Just a short speed boat ride away is Manda Bay, a private island that is perfect for families interested in watersports and a bit of relaxation and quality time together. The bandas on the beach are sizeable and the new pool area is fabulous if you don’t fancy heading of by boat to one of the reefs to dive and snorkel. Evenings are either centred around a candlelit beach dinner, with the complete table service you would expect from a city restaurant or you might like to try Manda’s evening dinner by the pool for just as much atmosphere.
