Just a brief light aircraft flight from Johannesburg is the game rich and Malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve.
For a family safari in South Africa the Madikwe reserve is an excellent choice. Most of the safari lodges in the Madikwe Game reserve are very family friendly, often with guides especially trained in safaris for children, and lodge units to accommodate families under one roof. The Madikwe is South Africa's second largest game reserve. The 75,000 hectare reserve is a joint venture embracing the North West Parks, the Tourism Board, the private sector and nearby communities.
Madikwe is bordered to the south by The Dwarsberg range of hills while to the north is the border of Botswana. To the east is the only perennial river, The Marico River that runs along the eastern boundary with the road from Zeerust to Gaborone road forming the western boundary of the reserve.
The Madikwe Game Reserve was established in 1991 and benefited from operation Phoenix – the largest translocation of game ever undertaken that introduced over 10,000 animals into the reserve. Not only does the Madikwe Game Reserve offer game viewing of the Big five lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, but it is also Malaria free, so the ideal destination for a family or first time safari. Madikwe is also incredibly easy to get to as it is just a short flight or a few hours drive outside of Johannesburg.
Madikwe’s rich grassy plains and open woodland are home to not just the big five but also cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, hippo, zebra, spotted hyena, brown hyena, springbok, eland, kudu, wildebeest, warthog, crocodile and Chacma baboon along with the numerous antelope that also roam the reserve.
The Madikwe is also the bird lovers paradise where you can look forward to seeing Martial Eagle, the African Fish Eagle, the Secretary Bird and the Pale Chanting Goshawk, Spotted Eagle Owls and the tiny Pearlspotted Owl to name just a few.
