Mauritius; World class hotels and pristine beaches.
Mauritius, in the exotic Indian Ocean is often considered a travel connoisseur’s paradise for its luxurious top class hotels but is also the perfect choice for a relaxing beach retreat after the heat and excitement of a luxury African safari for couples and families.
This is an island paradise of volcanic origin with white sand beaches and palm fringed lagoons formed by sheltering barriers of coral reefs; there are luxury hotels and the island is known for its warm and friendly people. If is possible to tear yourself away from the warm azure Indian Ocean Mauritius has many other delights to enjoy – mountains with cooling waterfalls and vivid tropical flowers, lush golf courses and first class spa facilities. There are vibrant towns such as cosmopolitan Grand Baie and quieter resort areas. Since the sixteenth century Mauritius, one of the Mascarene Islands one of the Mascarene Islands, has been under the control of the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British before finally becoming an Independent Republic in 1992. The mix of the heritage of old and current populations of the island is evident in the mix of Chinese, African, Indian and French influences within their cuisine. Most of the population are bilingual being equally fluent in English and French with Creole also spoken in the everyday environment together with several oriental languages.
Mauritius has a tropical climate modified by the southeast trade winds. The island enjoys year round sunshine with the best months to visit being the warm dry winter from May to November. A hot wet and humid summer is the flavour from then until May and although January and February are noted as cyclone season, their arrival is rare although these months are best avoided by travellers whose prime focus is the wonderful diving around the island.
Visitors have a large selection of excellent accommodation from luxury hotels and large world famous resort style properties to intimate boutique style hideaways for couples and romantics. Mauritius is a superb choice for a family holiday with a comfortable climate and superior facilities for example the Belle Mare Plage and the One&Only Le Saint Géran that go the extra mile for the little ones yet provide enough quality stylishness to keep everyone else happy.
Mauritius is a paradise for deep sea fishing and fishing boats can be hired from almost all hotels. All variety of water sports, snorkelling and scuba diving are all superb in the cobalt blue Indian Ocean which is calm and relatively shallow due to the surrounding coral reef. On request the hotels can all organise tours and excursions to visit the bustling capital Port Louis or the busy garment markets of the Central Plateau towns of Quatre-Bornes and Curepipe for example.
With frequent direct flights from Nairobi and Johannesburg, Mauritius is well connected and fits very comfortably into a luxury safari itinerary in either Southern Africa or East Africa, bringing the exciting game viewing experience to a laid back and relaxed ocean side conclusion. Mauritius has much to offer both honeymooners and families within the range of accommodation and facilities.
