Mozambique's luxurious beach lodges

Mozambique is a glorious destination for barefoot beach luxury and adventure beneath the Indian Ocean exploring the treasures of the coral reef.

Mozambique lies on the along the southeast coast of Africa and is a land of rugged highlands, plateau, rivers, lakes and intriguing archipelago islands. Whilst it shares part of its border with Malawi that actually runs through Lake Niassi (Lake Malawi) and there is a luxury safari lodge on the lake shore it is the beaches and tiny islands in the Indian Ocean off its eastern border that delivers the most superb beach experience.

Mozambique has had a turbulent history and as a coastal trading port for trade between the Middle East, Africa and India for gold and ivory its cargo also included slaves. During its most recent period of history the country was ravaged by a long and violent civil war which decimated many areas, thankfully however, it has left that far behind.

The country enjoys a tropical climate split into two seasons – a wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September. There are regular scheduled flights to Maputo and Pemba providing uncomplicated access to the Mozambique coast following an active safari holiday. It is a perfect destination to relax and wriggle those toes in the powder white sand of beaches lapped by warm turquoise seas. When you want to return to some activity this is a very desirable destination to indulge in dhow trips, snorkeling, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.

The Quirimbas Archipelago is located in the Cabo Delgado Province of northern Mozambique and is comprised of a magical chain of 32 un-spoilt coral islands that have remained untouched by mass tourism. The archipelago is a real wildlife jewel in the Indian Ocean with a wealth of wildlife both on shore and within the surrounding coral reefs – huge African Fish Eagles swooping over the mangrove swamps, turtles breeding on remote and isolated sand banks and in the deeper channels of the ocean whales have been spotted.

Arriving into Pemba a short light aircraft will transfer you to the stunning islands of Vamizi and Ibo where you will enjoy such seclusion, privacy and a chic castaway experience. Vamizi Island is the flagship for an environmental project and has superb beaches while Ibo Island is steeped in the history and rich culture of Mozambique.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is made up of the islands of Bazaruto, Benguera and Santa Carolina, the San Sebastio Peninsula and the hinterland of Vilanculos and Inhassoro. At Vilanculos the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park is Africa’s largest Marine Park and the view of dhows plying back and forth across the Bazaruto Straights is the same as it has been for thousands of years. The area is also very important for bird life with over 200 species recorded, the largest concentrations on Bazaruto Island itself. For this stretch of beach heaven flights arrive at Maputo and visitors are transferred to their luxury hideaway accommodation by various methods including light aircraft.
