The famous Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania is immensely important on many different levels - as a place of excellent and prolific game, breathtaking geological landscape and archaeology relating to the earliest origins of man. The area contains one of Africa’s most amazing natural wonders – the Ngorongoro Crater.

The Ngorongoro Highlands is the name given to the dramatic range of volcanic mountains that straddles the Rift Valley escarpment to the south of the Serengeti National Park and here you will find the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Conservation Area was first designated as such in 1959 and then declared a World Heritage Site twenty years later.

The Ngorongoro Crater is acknowledged as the largest intact caldera in the World having been preserved almost in the shape of a perfect bowl measuring some 18km across. The crater floor covers an area of 260²km and lies at a depth of a third of a mile from the surrounding terrain. The crater floor contains a diversity of natural habitats – grassland, forest, swamp and a soda lake that is filled by the Munge River. This range of terrain, together with strict protection and restriction of game vehicle access has created a year round place of sustenance for the animals and excellent game viewing activities for wildlife enthusiasts.

Black Rhino, one of the most fragile and endangered species, flourish within natural environment of the Ngorongoro Crater and are very much a success story with the small but thriving herd being one of the few to continue breeding in the wild.

The conservation area is also known for its wildebeest, gazelle, lion, spotted hyena, hippo, buffalo, elephant as well as leopard, serval and ostrich.

Naturally, an exceptional destination is extremely popular and probably features on the “to do” lists of most safari travellers. It is best, therefore to be prepared that this is not one of Africa’s exclusive wilderness destinations. That said, however, it is one of the most staggering experiences which should not be missed and with the level of ever present game it will satisfy even the most travelled visitor.

Olduvai Gorge, where you will undoubtedly spend some of your safari time, en route to your lodge or game drive, is a world renowned archaeology site where tools and fossils belonging to early man have been uncovered and are displayed in the museum.

There are several excellent lodges situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and highlands although none has such an exceptional location as the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. This colonial style lodge is built on the Crater’s south western rim and both the main lodge and intimate tree camp enjoy exceptional views of the crater floor. The luxury of the suites and superb hospitality makes this one of the most ideal places to stay – the stuff dreams are made of and definitely an extra special safari experience.

A safari in northern Tanzania is not complete without spending a few nights at one of the lodges close to the crater itself and this special safari experience is certainly enhanced by the exciting activity of a unique game drive in a volcanic caldera.
