Botswana Safaris, experience the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of the most spectacular places to enjoy a safari holiday in Botswana. Botswana’s pristine wetland is the world’s largest inland delta that attracts numerous species to it’s rich habitat. As the river has no outlet into the sea it floods out irrigating 15000 square kilometres of the Kalahari desert. The Okavango Delta is superb as a location for a Botswana safari as it offers a rich variety of habitats to be enjoyed by game vehicle, on foot, by boat and Mekoro (a traditionally crafted canoe).

The Okavango delta follows a seasonal flood pattern which begins in mid summer in the northern delta and then six months later in the south during May and June. The flooding of the delta is often so evident that the reed lined islands that are intertwined by the crystal these sparkling channels of delta water are completely submerged.

The delta’s headwaters are sourced in Angola’s western highlands, along the way there are numerous tributaries all merging to form the Cubango river, which when it then flows through Namibia it becomes the Kavango river and when arriving in Botswana, it’s name changes slightly again to become the Okavango.

Millions of years ago the Okavango river flowed gently ending up at the large inland lake, Lake Makgadikgadi which is now known as the Makgadikgadi Pans. Plate activity drastically affected the flow of the river causing it to pool forming what is now called the Okavango delta. This plate activity has created a unique web of water ways that now support a vast array of animals and plant life that would have otherwise been a dry, desolate Kalahari savanna.

The Okavango wetlands are beautiful and unspoilt, offers a diverse eco-system for a safari in Botswana as it provides a home for a range of African animals that you are likely to see whilst on in Okavango, such as elephant, buffalo, hippos, lechwe, giraffe, crocodile, cheetah, leopard and lion in addition to established packs of wild dog and over 400 species of bird.

Located in the eastern corner of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Game reserve which is often described as the most beautiful game reserve in Southern Africa. The Moremi reserve boasts a diverse range of wildlife throughout the year. With habitats such as riparian woodlands, acacia forests and dry savannah to floodplains with reed fringed islands and permanent water channels the Moremi is known for both its range of animals and plants alike.

The Birdlife in the Moremi reserve and on the Delta is prolific and varied and ranges from elegant water birds to the more hidden forest inhabitants. There are many species of ducks and geese throughout the Moremi, as well as a wide variety of heron.

This wonderful corner of Botswana with its distinctly different scenery to explore is a fabulous area within which to base your safari. Botswana has such an abundance of game and many different activities such as mokoroing and boating to enjoy the sparkeling waterways to walking and game drives in pursuit of those inhabitants of bush. Moremi game reserve and the Delta offers an active yet very comfortable Okavango Safari location.
