Luxury safaris in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of last totally unspoilt wildlife areas in Africa and the resulting wildlife makes for superb game viewing. This has made Botswana one of the best choices of safari holiday destination. The pristine wetland is in fact the World's largest inland delta seasonally created by rains originating high in the Angolan western highlands beginning in October with the floods reaching the end of the delta in Botswana during the month of July. The numerous tributaries that merge along the way into the Cubango River that then flows through Namibia changing its name to the Kavango River and on arrival in Botswana it becomes the Okavango.

Without an outlet into the sea the Okavango River floods into the Kalahari Desert covering some 15,000 square kilometres, submerging the islands and creating a web of lush waterways rich with wildlife. Over a million years ago the river also flowed into Lake Makgadikgadi, however, over time geological movements drastically changed the path of the river and the area became one of the largest salt flats in the World. The plate activity, whilst creating the dry pan thereby also created the rich wetland habitat of the Okavango Delta in place of the dry desert.

The superb game that enjoys the lush wetlands includes elephant, buffalo, hippos, lechwe, giraffe, crocodile, cheetah, leopard and lion as well as settled packs of wild dog and over 400 different species of bird. The area is a bird watching paradise with varied species ranging from long legged water birds to the elusive forest inhabitants.

The best safari experiences in the Okavango are fortunately not restricted to just one season which is good news for the traveller in terms of time and cost; for the devotees of game viewing the best time in the Delta is during the months of May to October when the wildlife is most concentrated in the flooded areas and the vegetation has become dried out. Come the rainy season - November to April - the migrant bird populations return in huge numbers to enjoy the green lushness of the area thereby creating a haven for bird watchers. Visitors can enjoy the exceptional game viewing and birding by a variety of means - game drives, walking, by motor boat and Mekoro (a traditionally crafted canoe).

The Moremi Game Reserve, situated towards the eastern region of the Okavango Delta is thought of as one of the more stunning game reserves in Southern Africa and is home to a diverse collection of wildlife resident throughout the seasons. With a variety of natural habitats such as dense woodlands, acacia forests and dry plains; floodplains dotted with little islands and permanent water ways the Moremi is well known for its excellent game viewing experience due to its range of both flora and fauna.

Most of the safari accommodation in the Okavango Delta is tented safari camps, often constructed on stilts connected by decking which are ideally placed to capture the best views of the surrounding area. The excellent staff and experienced guides are extremely knowledgeable about the terrain and the wildlife to deliver the best all round experience of comfort and excitement.
