The sweeping sand dunes at Sossusvlei.
A pristine and sweeping panorama of the deep orange and dark red sands dunes of Sossusvlei are an iconic image of Namibia and this ever changing landscape is breathtaking natural beauty at its best.
The dunes of the Namib Desert are thought to have been created by enormous amounts of sand being deposited into the Atlantic Ocean by the Orange River. The original coastal dunes were pushed back inland over millions of years by the constant movement by winds which continue to shape and reshape them to this day. The exceptional mountains of sand, which may rise to some 300 metres making them the highest in the world and are the dream of amateur photographers that come to this desert area of Namib Naukluft Park to enjoy and employ their craft.
The best time of day to visit the Sossusvlei Dunes is at sunrise and sunset when the colours are strong and vivid allowing the best photographic opportunities as does the midday although the intense desert heat will make the personal conditions more uncomfortable. A leisurely and serene way to see the dunes and which is extremely popular is a hot air balloon safari. Transferring to the launch site almost before first light to board the craft so that the balloon is lifted by the desert’s strong thermal winds, gently floating into the atmosphere with the rising sun and to drift across the desert landscape giving a 360ºC panoramic view of the bare, amazingly sculptured dunes with the rising sun warming the shades of colour from pale apricot to vivid orange.
The dunes are located some 60km from the entrance to the Namib Naukluft Park known as the Sesriem gate with the journey taking approximately an hour. As the Sesriem gate only opens at sunrise this is the earliest anyone can enter the park to travel to the dunes unless staying at Sossus Dune Lodge which is the only lodge located within the park itself.
Sossus Dune Lodge is a luxurious safari lodge set at the foot of a mountain just 4km from Sesriem gate. The lodge comprises of just 25 luxury tented chalets built on raised decking, enjoying superb views of the distant dunes and is in walking distance to nearby Sesriem Canyon. Guests of the lodge benefit from its location as they can reach the Sossusvlei dunes in time to enjoy the majestic sunrise and can stay after sunset. The guided activities here include a romantic after dinner stargazing stroll and perhaps a night game drive, with a spotlight fixed to the roof of the 4 x 4 vehicle operated by an experienced tracker to identify the shadows and get sightings of Cape Fox, Jackals, Hyenas and Aardwolf.
Bearing in mind the restrictions on entry/exit times to the park guests enjoy drives at the best times out into the desert landscape to catch the sun creating shapes and colours from the sands.
The Sossusvlei Dunes also lend themselves to a range of exciting physical activities which are an attraction for many visitors from around the World, whether keen photographers or adrenaline seeking dune sand surfers or quad bikers.
