Lebala Camp in the Kwando private concession...
Lebala Camp in Botswana.
Lebala is a classic tented camp, located in a vast private concession in northern Botswana on the Kwando River.
The camp takes its name from the local Setswana language which means “wide open spaces” and as soon as you arrive it is clear to see why. With large open grassland interspersed with savannah, mopane woodland and riverine forest this region supports a wide diversity of wildlife throughout the year. Lebala is a lovely remote and exclusive safari camp with just 8 rooms which are set in an open area of lush grasslands, which compliment and contrast well with many other safari camps in the Okavango Delta.
The accommodation is very comfortable with just eight spacious tents built on raised wooden decks overlooking the savannah. Large en-suite bathrooms lead out to an “open-air” shower, enclosed by a high reed wall. The rooms all have a private viewing deck where guests can relax in the shade and the camp also has a small swimming pool.
Lebala's bar is well stocked with local beers, spirits and soft drinks, and a fine selection of wine. The camp also has a wonderful curio shop on the far side of the lounge which has a selection of locally crafted items (including ostrich necklaces made by San bushmen).
Lebala has a cosy fire pit around which you can enjoy a morning tea or coffee before heading out on safari. To the front of the camp is a wonderful plunge pool which enjoys superb viewings across the plains, so that you can still view the animals as you relax and cool off in the heat of the day.
The raised decking to the back of camp looks out over wetlands and you can sit in the shade of the trees with a book and relax and watch the game amble by. This is also quite a spot for bird watching.
Lebala camp is located in the private Kwando concession covering more than 1,400m². The western side of which is mainly dense mopane forest, with the stretch of the Kwando River being flanked by lush riverine forest, interspersed with open plains. Kwando is a wild reserve and game viewing here is superb. It attracts excellent numbers of big game, especially during the dry season when elephants may seem to be everywhere. Lebala is also in a very good location for predators with lion, leopard, cheetah and the endangered wild dog thriving on the concession. Birdlife is prolific with over 400 species found in northern Botswana.
Lebala camp has fabulous game viewing opportunities both during the day and after sunset on night drives. Depending on the seaon, Lebala camp guides may also offer short safari walks although this is depends on the number of elephant near to camp. Lebala’s professional team always ensure that an able tracker in addition to a guide accompany all of their guests on game drives to ensure there are enough pairs of eyes to search out the most impressive of lion prides and the smallest of tracks on the ground.
