Onguma Tented Camp in Namibia

Onguma tented camp is an elegant, comfortable and exclusive luxury safari camp that shares in the 20,000 hectares of private wilderness adjacent to the spectacular Etosha National Park.

Onguma has an understated yet luxurious style and it’s seven huge tented suites are perfectly located overlooking a waterhole. Inside the suites the design reflects the harsh, sun-baked colours and textures of the surrounding bush as each is cut out of rough stone, exposed wood and dressed with soft billowy fabrics. Each suite has privately positioned indoor and outdoor showers, separate toilets, twin stone basins and a private sitting area and verandah.

The living area at Onguma tented camp is located by a waterhole which provides excellent game viewing as the animals come down to drink and cool off during the heat of the day. There is a pool to cool off in which is encircled by wooden decking from which to watch the mesmerising sunsets before heading hrough to an open-sided comfortable lounge and dining area. The chefs at Onguma are fabulous and will tempt you each night with European and traditional African cuisine before a nightcap around the camp fire with the deep night sky overhead.

Game drives from Onguma are likely to offer you wonderful sightings of lion, leopard, rhino and elephant, along with many species of plains game and birds. Just a short game drive away is the Eastern gate to the Etosha National Park where in addition to Onguma Private Nature Reserve you can enjoy some memorable safari encounters.

Over two million years ago Etosha National Park was the site of a vast lake, fed by the Kunene river. Over many many years the river fluxed and changed its course through the land and the salt lake once here, receeded leaving just the few remaining water holes towards the southern boundaries of the park. Often animals can be seen gathered around them.

The region surrounding Onguma is also known for its impala, and in particular the black faced variety and the region reportedly also has the tallest elephants in Africa! These beasts measure up to an immense 4m at the shoulder when at full adult potential. The Etosha National park is also known as being one of the last wild sanctuaries of the endangered black rhino.

Various waterholes in and around the Etosha area ensure fantastic photographic opportunities and the thrill of seeing some of the largest mammals in the world.

The Onguma reserve has become an area involved in the innovative custodianship project for the black rhino. A short while ago 6 black rhinos were darted in Etosha National Park and shipped to the reserve, where they are protected and monitored.

For a luxury safari in Namibia Onguma tented camp combines very well with a few days on a flyin safari on the Skeleton Coast, along with a visit to the infamous and majestic Soussusvlei dunes, Fish River Canyon or Swakopmund the Germanic influenced coastal town on Namibia’s west coast which faces the unforgiving surging waves of the Atlantic ocean.
