Historic wine farms just outside Cape Town.

Roggeland Country House, South Africa.

Nestled against the backdrop of the bluey purple Drakenstein Mountains, the Roggeland Country Guest House sits in a peaceful rural spot at the crossroads of five wine routes - Paarl, Franschhoek, Wellington, Stellenbosch and Worcester in South Africa's fabulous winelands.

This makes the eighteenth-century Cape Dutch farmhouse an ideal base for exploring the world famous Winelands.

Situated just north east of the town of Paarl, Roggeland is just an hour’s drive from the city of Cape Town and slightly less from the international airport making it an easy first stop on a self drive itinerary. Alternatively, transfer by private vehicle for a couple of days recuperation from a long haul flight before having your hire car delivered to you to continue at your leisure.

Owned by the Minkley family since 1993 they have been responsible for transforming it into the beautiful guest house it is today with cosy, comfortable accommodation, superb cuisine and full Cape hospitality.

The farmhouse itself has retained many original features of traditional Cape architecture such as exposed Yellowwood beams, reed ceilings and quaint wooden shuttered windows. Comfortable chairs placed in shade of huge oak trees on the lush green lawns allow guests to settle themselves in a perfect spot to watch the changing colour of the mountains at sunset whilst enjoying a glass of wine produced in a local vineyard.

The ten bedrooms, six superior and four standard, have their own unique character and are furnished in a charming, country style with comfortable double or twin beds and cooled by ceiling fans. Each room has en-suite facilities, either bath and freestanding shower or bath and shower combination. To aid maximum relaxation there are no televisions in the bedrooms and room service is available.

Children of all ages are welcome with a separate early evening meal for those under 12 years of age and staff providing a baby sitting service to enable parents to enjoy a relaxed evening meal with total peace of mind.

In the dining room which was the original farmhouse kitchen and still has the traditional fireplace and original oven, guests can enjoy a superb four course dinner, accompanied by specially selected wines to enhance each course, from menus that take their inspiration from the local produce of the region making full use of the vegetables and herbs grown right there in Roggeland’s own gardens.

In addition to the surrounding Winelands with its world famous vineyards where tasting and purchasing are of course very enjoyable, there are many other attractions in this part of the Cape. There are cheese factories, excellent port and brandy cellars and wonderful cuisine combined with majestic scenery with warm and welcoming country hospitality. This area is rich in history including being credited with the birth of the Afrikaans Language. The monument that commemorates the origin and growth of Afrikaans is situated on Paarl Mountain and was declared a national monument in 1963.

There are many activities and day trips within easy reach of Roggeland (including Cape Town City and its vibrant V&A waterfront) such as excellent golf courses, horse riding, a bird sanctuary, fly or fresh water fishing, canoeing on the Breede River or a visit to the Bushman paintings on the west coast.

Overall, this is an excellent location from which to launch a self drive itinerary or to wind down at the end of a luxury safari trip before heading to Cape Town International Airport and home.
