spectacular scenery of the Great Rift Valley...
Shompole Lodge.
In southern Kenya, the Nguruman Escarpment forms the western wall of the mighty Great Rift Valley and extends to the northwestern corner of Lake Natron. The spectacular scenery and varied landscapes owe their existence to the volcanic movement of the rift valley.
Lake Natron contains the most caustic water on the planet yet has Lesser Flamingoes returning here in their thousands to feed on the alga that flourishes and to breed in relative safety as few predators can survive in this harsh environment. The lake’s pink feathered blanket of birds attracts wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.
The Shompole Conservancy, located along the Nguruman Escarpment, covers an area of 35,000 hectares and is a short thirty minute flight from Nairobi, The Masai Mara or Amboseli.
The private concession of Shompole is home to many species of animals and bird life including plains game and several nocturnal animals such as aardvark, civet, serval, leopard and striped hyena. Cheetah, lion and elephant are found in the swamp and grassy plains. Other wildlife in the area includes buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, eland and gazelle.
Shompole Lodge, one of the luxury safari properties, is situated on the side of the escarpment, overlooking the panoramic expanse of the Great Rift Valley and a brief ten minute road transfer from Shomple South Airstrip. Each of the lodges’ six stylish, luxury tented rooms offer privacy and comfort and are attractively created of striking whitewashed stone twisted into artistic shapes, supported and decorated with bare bleached wood under a high canopied thatched roof. The spacious facilities include huge beds swathed in acres of white netting, a cool-pool, lounge and en-suite facilities laid in an open plan design with the intention of capturing as much of the available breeze as possible together with views across the landscape that go on forever.
The communal areas of main lounge and dining room are housed beneath a high thatched roof and overlook Mount Shompole and the Rift Valley. Guests also have the option to enjoy meals in the privacy of their own tented room, at the main pool or al fresco in the bush. All of the structures are created to blend into the landscape to minimise any conflict with the surrounding nature.
As an alternative Little Shompole, a few minutes walk from the main Shompole Lodge, consists of just two private suites. Each suite has its own lounge area, cool-pool and sundeck overlooking the Lake Natron basin and the volcanic hills of northern Tanzania.
With luxury African family safari vacations becoming increasingly popular Shompole House has been added to the property to meet this demand. The house has been constructed from local materials and sits on the ridge above Shompole Lodge. There are two bedrooms, each with en-suite facilities, dining area, swimming pool, waterfall shower and outside bath. The spacious master bedroom has superb views across Lake Natron and the Loita hills and the cascading waterfall feeds the two swimming pools the larger of which has an infinity edge.
Guests can enjoy a great range of activities with scarlet clad Maasai guides such as early morning and evening walks, game drives, river trips, night drives, sundowner visits to Lake Natron to see the flamingos.
