Namibia Luxury Safari Camps
Namibia is a unique safari destination. The country straddles two great deserts, the Namib with its sea of red sand along the Atlantic coastline and the Kalahari. The resulting landscapes are breathtaking in scale and colour which mesmerise photographers with its wild seascapes, lonely deserts and rugged mountains. The national parks, wildlife and cultural history provide an excellent all round vacation experience. The typical desert climate of hot days and cool nights can be stretched to extremes as during the winter months visitors may awake to a freezing dawn.
Whilst there are self drive opportunities access to some camps and lodges many of the luxury camps are only accessible by air provided by an excellent network of “fly-in safaris”. The remoteness and solitude of the locations provide a perfect antidote to the hectic hustle and bustle of normal life together with an atmosphere of luxury and exclusivity.
The famous Skeleton Coast lies on the northerly section of the Namib desert towards the border with Angola and a light aircraft will fly over this dramatic coastline to access Skeleton Coast Camp. A very intimate camp with just six Meru style luxury tents each with spacious accommodation and en-suite facilities. Guests have much to explore in this desolate region by 4x4 vehicles and on foot. Excursions to Cape fur seal colonies, visits to Himba villages can be arranged and secret water sources create freshwater springs for the desert adapted elephants, gemsbok, springbok, giraffe and ostrich.
The Onguma Game Reserve, on the eastern Etosha, has excellent wildlife including a family of black rhino and over 300 species of birds. Guests at Onguma Safari Camp can also enjoy game drives into Etosha National Park. The camp has been created in the style of “safari chic” using the natural colours and textures of the surroundings for the comfortable and luxurious furnishings of the communal areas and white billowing tented rooms. From each bed in every tent, there is a direct view out onto a waterhole that is floodlit at night.
In the NamibRand Nature Reserve, Wolwedans has a range of properties from five star, marble bathroom style to rustic camps. Wolwedans Dune Lodge has nine chalets and is set on top of a dune plateau with stunning views in all directions. The lodge has the atmosphere of a tented camp but with the comforts of a permanent structure.
Damaraland is a mountainous wilderness region of outstanding natural beauty and within the hills, Namibia's best known rock art. The unique wildlife includes the desert adapted elephant and the last free roaming black rhinos in the world. Mowani Mountain Camp has just twelve luxury tents that enjoy superb, comfortable furnishings, en-suite facilities and a wooden deck on which to completely relax and chill out to enjoy the landscape. Damaraland Camp has ten thatched rooms each with en-suite facilities and the delicious meals are prepared over an open fire to be enjoyed under a starry sky.
Okonjima is the home of the AfriCat Foundation which provides environmental education and ongoing research in collaboration scientists and conservationists as well as caring and rehabilitating young, orphaned or injured cats to be released into the wild. Okonjima Bush Camp is set on the edge of a wilderness area and all of the eight luxury thatched chalets and one honeymoon suite are set so as to ensure complete privacy. The chalets have excellent facilities, chic furnishings and 180º canvas panelling that can be rolled up to allow a fabulous bush veldt view.
