Tanzania Luxury Safari Camps

Tanzania is an exciting safari destination which has a rich cultural history that compliments its excellent game viewing. The famous Ngorongoro Crater and well renowned archeological site of Olduvai Gorge, where tools and fossils of early man have been uncovered, are just two of the many amazing experiences to be enjoyed.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is built high on the crater’s south western rim in the style of colonial luxury. The property comprises of the north camp and south camp each with twelve suites and the slightly more intimate Tree Camp which has just six. The view of the Crater floor from each of the camps is exceptional. The service at the lodge is exceptional and enhanced by each suite having its own butler. Game drives down on the crater floor, visits to local Maasai villages and beautiful lakes coupled with the abundant wildlife make this a very special safari experience.

Lake Manyara National Park has an incredibly diverse selection of habitats which are home to an abundance of plant and animal species including its impressive elephant herds, tree climbing lions and birdlife. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge located at the foot of an escarpment and close to a soda lake has ten tree house style rooms set on raised wooden platforms with palm-thatched roof, each surrounding a huge tree that forms part of its structure. The chefs prepare delicious meals from the open kitchen which guests then enjoy al fresco.

The Serengeti National Park is one of the World’s oldest conservation areas. It boasts excellent resident game viewing but of course is World famous for the annual Great Migration – sometimes called “the greatest show on earth”. Migration Camp is situated in the path of the migrating herds and therefore the best time to stay is between July and November when the action is right at the doorstep of the camp. Each of the huge tents have been carefully positioned overlooking the Grumeti River and are elegantly equipped with comfortable furnishings and luxury en-suite facilities. The camp guest area is well appointed to maximise the surrounding vista and game viewing opportunities from the comfort of the camp.

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp sits right on the banks of a bi-water of the Grumeti River which, despite being home to some of the largest crocodiles in Africa, is a crossing point of some two million animals on their annual journey into the Masai Mara. This is an ideal location for any wildlife enthusiast. The camp has ten luxurious tents with comfortable beds, en-suite open-air showers and authentic African furnishings. The guest areas are open fronted with excellent decks and evening meals are eaten to the background swell of resident hippos.

The Ruaha National Park lies within and along the Great Rift Valley and offers a more traditional and private safari experience. Jongomero Camp is luxury safari accommodation on the banks of the Jongomero Sand River and is the only camp situated in this area of the Park. Just eight large tents, set on raised wooden platforms are spaced out along the river bank to deliver further privacy to guests.

The Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania is not, strictly speaking a traditional safari destination with its powder white sand fringed lakeshore and lush mountains. However, here is the perfect habitat for Tanzania’s densest population of primates.

Guests at Greystoke Mahale stay in thatched double storey bandas that sit on decking that overlooks an idyllic white beach but it is the lake opportunities and activities with the primates that set this camp apart from a traditional safari. It is possible to track chimps with an expert guide, kayak on Lake Tanganyika, swim, snorkel or for a lazier option take a sail on an old dhow.
