In November, I had the absolute joy of visiting Botswana and staying in four fabulous Wilderness Safaris Camps: Kwetsani, Vumbura Plains, Qorokwe and Savuti Camp. As a first timer to Botswana, I was full of expectations about my trip and it certainly did not disappoint. I fell in love with the remote, vast landscapes, the exceptional game viewing, the variety in terms of land and water-based safari activities and the truly stunning camps and friendly, welcoming staff.

The few days that I spent at Vumbura Plains, one of Botswana’s most luxurious and unique camps, situated in a private concession in the northern Okavango Delta were truly memorable.  From the surprise ‘champagne and smoothie stop’ in the middle of the bush en-route to the camp all the way through to the farewell to our exceptional guide, Ron, these few days will remain in my mind forever.

One day, in fact, was probably the most perfect day on safari ever; a day of really fabulous game viewing (including a sighting of the elusive honey badger), an exhilarating boat ride, an elephant and a hippo ‘visiting’ the camp, a helicopter flight over the Delta, sun-downers and finally, on our return to camp, a Boma dinner under the starry African night sky listening to the talented camp choir singing ‘Beautiful Botswana’.

One of the significant advantages of staying at Vumbura Plains is that it is one of the camps in the Okavango Delta to not only offer reliable, prime game viewing throughout the year but also year round land and water based activities and night game drives. To really experience the diversity of the Delta landscape there is nothing better than having the opportunity to travel by mokoro (the traditional dug out canoe used in this region), by motor boat, on foot or in a 4×4 vehicle both during the day and at after dark.

Vumbura Plains itself is contemporary and minimalist, yet sits beautifully within its surroundings, and most definitely has a real wow factor when you are first arrive and are greeted by the waving staff. It consists of two separate camps; North and South Camp each with their own main areas and seven suites which are on raised wooden platforms. The boardwalk between the two camps stretches 1.6km and offers the opportunity to burn off some of those additional calories during your afternoon rest!

The suites, all with fabulous views, are vast and incredibly luxurious with your every possible need catered for and the private plunge pool, surrounded by a private deck and comfortable lounging area, is a great way to cool off in the heat of the day. Service levels are incredibly high and the whole team is focused on making your stay as perfect as possible.
